A Sneak Peak into Castle Land!
By: Wendy Carrothers, Nanny Kay
Gayathri Subramaniam, and Becky Wurstner
I love telling stories. Once, during an island festival, our Queen Mum, a stork, declared me the best storyteller. Professor Knows-A-Lot, the cheetah, my teacher, said that I am good historian as I rely on facts. The better my words are the better that I express myself!
I keep a little note pad with me at all times, along with a number 2 pencil, so I can write down the good words I hear or read; later I look up the ones I do not know. It was Uncle Chelsea the stork, who gave me the nickname "Words". (To get a name from Uncle Chelsea is considered a great honor.)
Castle Land is two pelican's breath past the last snow peaked mountain not found on any map. The whole island glistens with magic. The magic that keeps ships from landing on its shores, and yet the same magic that lets children find it in their dreams. It is a place intended only for children; adults can come for a visit but only if they are invited by a child. On rare occasion, very important adults do come to speak with the Grand Marshal and Queen Mum. I guess like most rules, there are exceptions to this one too.
More than magic keeps the island safe there is "Ice" the Rhinoceros, and a pride (team) of very large lions that are always on guard. Later I will tell you more about Ice and two of the lions, well known by all children, Muscles and Fearless. Many of the children get to know them well. Sometimes the children take turns climbing onto the backs of Fearless and Muscles, riding them around on the island.
My home is in the lagoon under one of two bridges of the island.
This island, filled with magic, is a haven for children. It takes nightmares and fear out of children's dreams. On Castle Land, the children find whatever they need or want, including a magical playground. Here they are free to laugh, seek sound advice, or get a helping hand. It is a healthy escape from difficult moments.
While the children are here, they romp and play all night. Children can play with same kinds of animals that exist all over the world. They only need to dream of the animal and they are here.
What I like best about our island is that our visitors, the children, control the weather. If they want snow for a snowball fight, it snows. If they want to go surfing with Joey the dolphin, the surf comes up.
One of the bridges that goes between the meadow and the lagoon, and the other connects the meadow with the other side of the world. It is by that bridge that pets come to live here; this way when children come to visit, they can find their pets that they thought were forever lost to them, but are not; all pets live here on the island after they die on the other side. Some very special children get to come by way of the same bridge as the pets to visit us. They can do this at any time of the day. Can you imagine how special they must be to be able to come here without the help of our storks?
I chose to make my home right under the bridge in the meadow that crosses to the lagoon. This way I get to meet all who come giving me access to the lagoon and the meadow. I like meeting the children who want to see the lagoon. I am one of the island’s greeters. I meet the animals and children as they come across the bridge to the island. Queen Mum says it is an important job because I take fear out of children’s dreams as soon as they come across the bridge. Queen Mum said you have to be very kind and sensitive to do this. These children do not feel well. They have to spend a lot of their time resting. They cannot go out and play like other children because they are sick, so instead they come here to play on Castle Land's playground.
I have a special friend, her name is Julie; she helps me in telling our island's stories. Next month I will have her join me and we will tell you a very special story about Schnooky the black footed ferret who lives in the meadow.
